Is Festival Style Over?

This time of year I am usually find myself print screening or saving festival style content to my inspiration folder or wish list; however this year something has changed. I asked myself, is it a possible case of jealously that is fogging up the want side of my brain? Or maybe the stubbornly proud British side of my Leo self that believes a festival season without Glastonbury is not worth batting an eyelid for. Is music festival street style well and truly over? Not entirely. I think it has chosen different areas to flourish, that isn’t bombarding the nation with social media stories. Probably in the South of France somewhere…

One thing I know for sure is the increase in festival styling efforts over the past 5 years, and I don’t believe that it is for the reasons it used to be. Everywhere I chose to browse recent festival looks over the globe, there were more similarities in outfits rather than stand out personal style. More army pants, and heeled shoes to dance in than hunter wellies and a cozy jacket, and makeup and wigs prepared to unrealistic perfection which don’t scream festival style to me; but you know what they are? Instagram trends. A new term that has evolved over the past 5 years especially, gracing our social media life’s thanks to the increase in influencers and on point brand marketing. None of which grace the catwalks anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I am the first to know what I will be wearing to each festival on which days, but for different reasons to festival fashionistas nowadays. Dress for comfort, the weather and still be able to showcase your signature style. Maybe even with only exposing your knees!

Let’s take a look back on some of the greatest festival looks of all time in my books, being Kate Moss,Laura Whitmore, and Alexa Chung. Ooooft.

The ladies pictured ooze style to me! By being unapologetic-ally themselves in their outfits but ensuring all activities that come with a festival can be tackled head on with their clothing. Like rain hail or shine or a shit load of mud, a dag-ward dog or two , copious random acts of dancing and the no hair brush or shower rule. Still looking fabulous as fuck might I add.

I am a firm believer that festivals are a time of year when you can go freely with your style and wear things maybe not applicable for everyday wear, and I am not knocking that at all. However dressing in statement clothing at festivals has resulted in not making a statement. It all looks the same. That's what makes me sad! So all I hope to gain from this post, is maybe some festival attendees over the season will put a bit more effort into dancing yourselves clean instead of unable to dance in your chosen attire and freezing your glitter tits off.

Much love

Mais xx
