Face and Fig is a creative space where two Gold Coast based ladies Sumara and Ruby share their content. From podcasts, to photography and visuals and writing, Face and Fig is the fortnightly fix that always puts things in perspective for me. Heres what they had to say!

First up, what initially was the driving force to begin Face and Fig?

Ruby: Well, it sort of started when Sumara just broke up with her boyfriend and I moved back to the Gold Coast from Brisbane. We just started hanging out a bit more and rekindled our friendship and basically connecting on a deeper level where we would talk about important things in real life so openly, whilst realising that no one our age would openly talk the topics we cover on such a public platform.

You both are very open and honest in each podcast episode, which is what makes it so refreshing to hear as a listener! Do you think it’s rare that ladies your age are willing to open their hearts the way you do?

Sumara : I dont entirely think its opening our hearts because we are putting a lot of our personal experiences out there to the world and I think its better because a lot of people that listen to our podcasts don't really know us, which makes it easier. As our content are all experiences that so many people go through and things that people don't necessarily talk about .

Ruby: It is refreshing as its a different social media platform to communicate on, compared to the usual methods of our generation.

Sumara and Ruby, how would you best describe the person you’re trying or hoping to be?

S: Someone who does not give a fuck about what anyone thinks and only cares about what I think about myself. Just to be the best person that I can possibly be without falling under the pressure of other peoples judgements and opinions or social norms.

R: Staying on track with what my goals are and continuing to do what makes me happy. Also not feeling that I should be doing anything else or in a certain way.

Where do you find inspiration for each podcast?

S&R : I think we find inspiration from talking to each other, as well with other people and how they feel about things. As we all go through so many similar experiences but with different context, and we all feel the same. You feel better when you talk about things instead of hiding them away, and thats the whole point of the podcast!

Do you believe you discuss topics close to your hearts or being relatable to your listeners?

Both! We both start with ideas that are close to our hearts and talk about things between the two of us, then we continue with ideas and experiences that have happened to us, and topics our listeners have responded to via our Instagram posts and thats the ideas we pursue more often as they are more inclined to listen to as they can relate. Because lets be honest no one wants to listen to Sumara and Ruby talking about something they have zero ways to relate to.

Are there any topics you wouldn’t discuss on your podcast? (If so why not)

Sumara : Present situations that I am going through, because I am so fine with discussing things that have occurred in the past as its in the past now but I would not be able to open up about something that is happening in my life right now. We do also have bad repercussions of our podcasts from some people in our lives that listen to some topics but that is just a part of doing this and that is something we have to work around.

Ruby: One thing I wouldn't go into detail about would be my personal life, like sex and relationship history as it really isn't relevant to Face and Figs content.

How does the writing process begin and play out?

Its all about how comfortable and secure we feel in our lives at that present time, where you can open up and actually talk about something you truly think is right to talk about.

Well usually it starts by us just talking between the two of us at a coffee shop or in the car at night and even with a group of friends we may think of a idea and then usually after that we will branch it out to people that we hang out with or talk with and then we ask general opinions about the topic on social media ( usually Instagram) and then we will sit down and talk about it whilst making a basic layout of how the podcast is going to go down in our book. We do this and try to have a plan because we notice if we don't they tend to result in being scattered and unorganised. But it always ends up being polished in a rough and raw way.

What is a dream for both you women?

Sumara: Never to work to live ever.

Ruby: To get published! I am studying creative professional writing and I have always wanted to write a novel or a book or at least a short story.

In 12 months time where will Face and Fig be?

S&R: I think we don't know where we will be, and we are so ok with that. We are just going to continue with it and see how our lives both progress, as its just a thing we do for pleasure not income! We just love hearing peoples responses, how people react and the feedback we get back from any podcast!

Explain yourself in 3 emojis ( both you gals!)

S: Blue butterfly, yellow loveheart and the sunflower! R: The dancing Spanish girl in the red dress, the love heart eyes and the star!!

Thank you ladies! I adore how you two are the best of friends and show your love and support for one another in each episode and cannot wait for more to come.
