Don’t we all scroll through our news feeds and gawk at the immaculately dressed ladies ( and gents) traveling the globe, looking like they are ready for NYFW… But question how do they do it out of a suitcase? Well if your answer is yes, this lil piece of writing will catch your eye; if not my apologies! So first things first, the location is the biggest deal breaker for having your portable wardrobe a 10/10 ( Obviously you won’t be packing faux fur and over the knee boots for a trip to Bali in summer) . So once the climate at your destination is locked in, we can get to the nitty gritty points.
It’s always extremely stressful accounting outfits for days on trips, I always make up 150 different weather scenarios in my head so ensure I am prepared for anything ( its sad i know ) . Starting with the basics, always pack a jacket no matter where you are going… planes and airports get freezing and you want to look stylish and be warm so its a win win! My suggestion would be a leather jacket or a vintage denim wash one, they go with anything and i mean anything, seriously go pick each item out of your wardrobe and I can promise you that it’ll all go perfectly with either jackets! Here are some of my favourites below.
Anyway, moving onto choices, denim always, depending on the climate do jeans/cut off shorts, either way paired with a baggy white t shirt or button up shirt its the most effortless look and can be dressed up or down. So add that to your outfit radar. Again, depending on location, bring floral! Why not look like your on vacation in Bora Bora, when in-fact your on the streets of London.. A dreamy floral two piece or a summer beach dress is so comfortable and refreshing to see dressed down with Chuck Taylor's or mules!
Another random tip is to always bring more tops than bottoms, you wash your tops heaps more than pants/skirts/shorts/jeans so you’ll need to account for that! The process tends to get easier when you build up some basic outfits like I’ve stated above and add in some statement pieces to ensure you never look like your wearing the same outfit twice, and trust me a pair of earrings or a hat can change a look all together! Speaking of hats, I have built up a rather large collection so know that they are not only a necessity whilst traveling, but a pain in the bum to keep intact! My biggest tip for anyone wanting to hats overseas would be to make a little hole in your suitcase where your clothes are and place the hat upside down in it, so that the head is perfectly fitted and not squished. You all will be gobsmacked when you get your suitcase off the plane and its not moved a muscle!
Shoe wise I usually go for three pairs, being one of each type of shoes i live in. A pair of boots, Chuck Taylors or Golden Goose and a pair of mules or loafers. I tend to invest in a pair of heels if needed whilst I’m away!
So the fun part, packing your suitcase! Its a tricky procedure packing, from slotting your shoes around like a game of Tetris, to attempting to use your household scales to get a rough estimate of your luggage weight; its a tough gig! My biggest lifesaver when it comes to packing clothes would be rolling up each garment, ( literally in the shape of a sausage roll) placing them all align with one another and hey presto you jam in double the amount of clothes into your suitcase AND nothing gets creased at all! After that place your shoes in each corner facing outwards to ensure they are kept in tip top shape whilst on the move!
With carry on luggage I always pack a change of clothes, facial moisturizing spray for the plane and a comfy pair of shoes like slides so I’m not grossing people out being barefoot on-board. My three favorite must have's for ultimate mile high comfort are below, First is Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream; you can seriously use it anywhere, from chapped lips to sunburn. Second Evian Mineral Water Spray which is perfecto for hydrating your skin and thirdly Fresh rose face mask which is suited for all skin types.
My final suggestion would be add your personal touch to your pieces always, that is what makes style so magical is because YOU make it yours just by putting it together!
