Ah trends. What a love hate relationship I have with you. One minute I am hooked with the must have item of the season, and then I am forced to part with it just a few short months later.

This is why I’m writing this piece, for all you girls or guys that are in the same boat as me. I really wish it was as simple as grouping together as fashion lovers and combing our budgets to own every on trend garment readily available. That would be the dream.

Anyway, lets get to the point. Here in Australia it’s slowly emerging into autumn and its wardrobe cleanout time. Using every platform under the sun to rid of last seasons pieces, to make room in my closet and bank account for 2017’s essentials. So this is when this article actually becomes meaningful. What do we need to keep this season? And what do we need to invest in? And most importantly, what needs to go!

Keep:

Anything basic, a white tee or shirt, oversized shorts, jeans in every colour under the sun minus the rips, a good old striped tee, floral anything and most of all a leather jacket of any sort alongside your trusty docs, connies or vans. I am still holding onto 90’s Drew Barrymore whilst I can.

Say Au Revoir to :

Chokers (please for the love of god let this one go, or if you cant just yet optimize for thin more delicate choice. Please ), Slogan tees (any shape or form) slides, (I know they are dam comfy) the slip dress, (we all need to say goodbye) crochet (can we all stop pretending it is comfortable?! ) over the knee boots ( yes I know how sexy they look and how slimming to the legs they can be but lets leave it to the horse riders from now on eh? ) ripped jeans or anything with a hole in it ( 4 seasons this has stayed put ladies, 4 seasons! ) .

Invest in :

Gingham is going to be huge this year, so think any matchy matchy numbers or tea dresses, you name it in the Gingham print you NEED IT.

Statement earrings, an amazing asset to any outfit; dress up dress down but add a funky pair of earrings are you can take on the world.

Grandma shoes, yes I typed correctly. Think loafers, chunky sandals and platforms. Pair them with sparkly or frilly socks and boom you have nailed the look.

Lace, all things lace but my personal must have is going to be a lace turtleneck. I call turtlenecks the superhero of dressing. You can do anything with it!

Anything shoulder-less, yes off the shoulder has been very overdone this year but think other alternatives to get those sexy shoulder-blades on show.

A suit, of any print, fabric or fit ! You can mix and match the blazer with a oversized pair of shorts or the pants with a slouchy basic tee. This is first on my list. Hunt down a suit that fits my butt.

Sequins, a newfound love of mine. Camis, blazers or subtle detailing on a rad leather or denim jacket will make you sparkle all night long.

Cream denim, nothing tastier than the new replacement of the white on white combo. Cream denim jacket, matched with cream mum jeans and low cut docs or loafers. Mmmm !

Velvet EVERYTHING, from skater skirts to socks you need at least one item of velvet to get into the winter groove. Plus its super warm, (because lets face it we really need it in Australia ! )

Last but not least, a statement boot. Floral prints, a bold metallic or just a super pointed pair. You will not regret this investment. Simply adding a pair of funky boots to a white shirt and shorts combo can make you look like you’re off to fashion week in a flash. Red lippy and windswept hair is optional but highly recommended.

I hope this has made your outlook on 2017 a little brighter or something along those lines.

Happy autumn cleaning

Maisie xxx
